Who is rick?
Rick is not just running for District 5 Commissioner—he is running to be a dedicated, effective advocate for the place he calls home. A resident of District 5 for 15 years, Rick understands that the strength of our county lies in the vitality of its neighborhoods, the success of its families, and the smart stewardship of its resources.
For years, Rick has demonstrated a deep commitment to Athens through service on the Planning Department’s Hearings Board, leadership in the Woodhaven Home Owner’s Association, and work with local non-profits like ATHICA. This experience has provided him with a critical, working knowledge of how our local government operates and, more importantly, how it can be improved to better serve you.
As Commissioner, Rick will bring a blend of professional expertise and local government insight to the Mayor and Commission.
Professionally, Rick has a strong background in Real Estate and Construction. Rick developed Chase Street Self Storage and award-winning infill housing, managing budgets, leading projects, and problem-solving.
This experience means Rick is ready to:
• Exercise Fiscal Responsibility: Carefully scrutinize the county budget, ensuring your tax dollars are spent efficiently on core services and smart investments.
• Champion Thoughtful Development: Advocate for zoning and planning decisions that preserve the character of District 5 neighborhoods while promoting sustainable growth.
• Foster Collaboration: Work constructively with the Mayor, fellow Commissioners, and the County Manager to break through gridlock and advance community-wide goals.
Rick is focused on the issues that directly impact your quality of life:
1. Safe & Thriving Neighborhoods: Working to increase public safety resources, support effective community policing, and invest in youth programs that provide positive alternatives and reduce crime.
2. Affordable and Quality Housing: Championing strategies that increase the availability of attainable housing options for working families, young professionals, and seniors, ensuring that all Athenians can afford to live here.
3. Infrastructure & Greenspace: Prioritizing the maintenance of our roads, sidewalks, and stormwater systems, and fighting to protect and expand our parks and greenspaces within District 5.
4. Support for Local Business: Promoting economic policies that help our local businesses thrive, create good-paying jobs, and strengthen our tax base.
Rick and his wife, Elizabeth, have raised two children. When not working for the community, you can find Rick enjoying the Skate Park of Athens.
"I believe in service above self. The Commissioner's job is to listen to the people of District 5 and translate their needs into smart, fair policy. I am ready to do the hard work required to make Athens-Clarke County a better place for everyone." – Rick Stanziale
